the calico wall: mystery 45s
the abaco dream - life and death in g&a / cat woman
label: A&M 1081, 1970, style: funk / obscuro
listen to mp3s: a-side
b-side
I got this record on the thinnest of presumptions: that anything with a Sly Stone (here as Sylvester Stewart) writing credit was worth picking up. Guess I was right !
The counter guy at The Thing, Frantz, took one look and said "Great to see Life and Death in G&A!" which seemed a great sign, too. Only when I took it home and listened to it and then googled it did I discover that it was some pretty hard rockin' funk! Julian Cope's Head Heritage psych website has an entry which says that it is Sly Stone under another name (avoiding his other contract); I'm not so sure about that. It also says that the title refers to "good and ass-shaking" which is possible. Either way, very DJable.
The flipside was a whole 'nother cup of meat, however. Credited to Eric Siday (who turns out to be the 2nd person ever to buy a Moog) it's a collection of Moog blips & squawks with a strange cockney vocal trying to "put the moves" on a lady. What the heck ? And why is it paired with this a-side ? Either way, I know I won't be passing up *everything* on A&M anymore!
