the calico wall: mystery 45s

continental cousins - buddha / kana kapila
label: Palette, 1961 style: surf / exotica / instrumental

listen to mp3s: a-side
b-side

Somehow I knew from the names on this disc when I saw it that it was surf. What I didn't know is that it was from... Belgium ?!

The A-side is a perfect surf tune, as good as most of the Dick Dale sides of the era. The B-Side is a somewhat corny exotica thing but still shows some serious musicianship...

How an American label came to release a Belgian group in 1961 is quite a mystery. It's also unclear if these tracks have been released on CD; if so then definitely only in Belgium. This group was known as simply the Cousins in Belgium; and A-Side may have been spelled "Boudha" over there.

One more thing: there's a clip of this group doing the A-Side on TV ! Check it out on YouTube.
