the calico wall: mystery 45s

the dimensions - fanny mae / brandywine blues
label: Mastertone, 1964?, style: rockin' white r'n'b/garage

listen to mp3s: a-side b-side

When I bought this 45 from a dealer in South Carolina, it was presented to me as "shag", i.e. Carolina beach music. It's definitely got a swingin' beat, but it sounds more like white r'n'b to me...

The A-Side is a great version of the old classic Fannie Mae, good backup vocals and harmonica. The driving/heavy bassline seems to me to indicate post-Beatles garage rockers, maybe around '64/'65.

The flip is a bit more serene, with some farfisa organ, but still pleasant...

The label is a mystery, there a few different labels called Mastertone and it's hard to nail down which ones are which. The band is incognito, but it's definitely a good candidate for a reissue!
