the calico wall: mystery 45s
los juniors - quisiera ser (i like the way) / viaje magico (magical mystery tour)
label: Peerless, 1968, style: pop-rock / garage beat / 'psych'
listen to mp3s: b-side
This Mexican obscurity came to me in a very strange place for such a thing: Portugal. It was part of a large (many thousand) collection of promo 45s sent to a Portuguese label in the 60's and 70's for possible release...
The A-Side is a (pointless) cover of a tune made slightly famous by Tommy James & The Shondells (unfortunately, nothing on the level of 'Hanky Panky' or 'Crystal Blue Persuasion' !) The B-Side is a hilarious translation of the classic Beatles track into Spanish and attempts to replicate the oddity of the original...and does a decent, if not technically perfect, job. Los Juniors were a fairly popular group in Mexico (Yucatan Peninsula) at the time, although this may have been their last 'rock' single before a turn for more straight pop territory...
