mary ann fisher - can't take the heartbreak / give
label: Seg-Way 1007, 1961, style: rhythm'n'blues / early soul

listen to mp3s: a-side b-side

Here's a pretty obscure one, found in Greenpoint, Brooklyn...

A lot of folks looking for soul gems like me probably have passed this one up in the past because the name and label aren't too familiar, but this is quite a classy record. Turns out Ms. Fisher was a Raelette! Here's a potted bio I found via Google:

Mary Ann Fisher was born in Henderson County, Kentucky, February 23,1923. She passed away on March 12,2004 in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1955 she met Ray Charles. She toured with Ray Charles from 1955 until 1958. Later on she became a solo act. She recorded two sides for Fire (Bobby Robinson's label) in 1959, two releases for Seg-Way in 1961,and two sides for Imperial in 1962. She also recorded "What Kind Of Man Are You" (with Ray Charles) on Atlantic. Her first album,"Songbird of the South" on Baby Hippo Records was released in January 2003.

The A-Side is a dramatic breakup ballad, the kind you can imagine Ray singing, complete with strings and a great vocal. The B-Side is mid-tempo number with horns, also Ray-ish in tone. Both great! This one remains uncompiled on CD as far as I know. Seg-Way featured releases by Bobby Moore and King Curtis among others and was located at 1650 Broadway in New York (so says the label anyway)...
