the calico wall: mystery 45s
vivian reed - the shape of things to come / somewhere (over the rainbow)
label: Epic, 1968, style: soul / rock
listen to mp3s: a-side
Here's another single I plucked from a large collection of promos sent to Portugal in the 60's and 70's. A great example of garage rock songs made even better in soul versions-- and this from a broadway singer...!
Vivian Reed was a Tony Award-winning broadway singer who was pushed by ATCO and Epic in the 60's to do some soul. One of her ATCO sides is a $300 single... this one apparently is more like $35, but it's killer-- the song is a Mann/Weil (New York songwriter) composition and will be most famous to readers of this page as a classic garage rock tune done by Max Frost & The Troopers on the Wild in the Streets soundtrack (some believe this group was actually just a project of Michael Lloyd of the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band). The B-Side is, yes, THAT song, done in a conventional pop/broadway style...
