DJ Set @ Upper Deck Tavern, 7.March.06
Long time no blog... that's what happens when the cushy temp jobs stop coming...
here's last Tuesday's DJ set, longer than usual...
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five (original LP) -- 1961's big Jazz pop hit!
Getz/Gilberto - Girl from Ipanema (45 on Verve) -- not a cliche in South Carolina...!
Ramsey Lewis Trio - Wade in the Water (LP on Cadet) -- 1966, one of the better instro "hits" of the year.
Bob Dylan - Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum (promo 45) -- from 2001's great blues album. I always forget to play this.
Dionne Warwick - I Say a Little Prayer (compilation LP) -- Warwick sings Bacharach. Classic.
Lightnin' Leon - Repossession Blues (Rita label 45, 1960) -- one of my best finds of recent times. Great lyrics and a great voice!
Chambers Brothers - Money (live 1966 LP "People Get Ready") -- great version of the old Motown tune.
Freddie King - Me and My Guitar (1972 Shelter 45) -- still love this one. Everything is perfect!
Flamingos - I Only Have Eyes for You (Compilation LP) -- one of the best doo-wop songs ever.
Bill Haley and his Comets - Thirteen Women (Decca 45, 1957) -- b-side to rock around the clock, a great tune about surviving the A-Bomb and finding yourself alone with lots of chicks around!
The Marcels - Blue Moon (compilation LP) -- pretty famous because of soundtracks, but still an amazing doo-wop tune!
The Jive Five - Kiss, Kiss, Kiss (UA single 1961) -- another great doo-wop tune...
US Bonds - New Orleans (single Top Rank 1957?) -- good rocker and dancer...
Jerry Lee Lewis - Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin On (Sun 45 1957) -- just got this original Sun single!
Lloyd Price - Stagger Lee (ABC-Paramount LP 1960) -- I got this LP for 50 cents! It's pretty scratched up but this track, with its big horns and great story, overwhelm the noise on the vinyl.
Crystals - And Then He Kissed Me (Philles single 1963) -- One of the Phil Spector classics. Next time I have to play the French version!
Aretha Franklin - Son of a Preacher Man (Atlantic promo comp 1970) -- just as good as Dusty's version!
Jimmy McCracklin - Every Night, Every Day (Imperial single 1966) -- One of the best things new to my ears in the last 6 months. R'n'B with horns, harmonica and terrific vocals & lyrics!!!
Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels - Breakout (New Voice LP 1968) -- always a cracker!
Jean Knight - Mr. Big Stuff (Stax single 1971) -- one of the very best Stax records to my ears. Everyone loves this record. always!
Hot Chocolate - You Sexy Thing (comp LP) -- Great 70's dancer...
Fred & The New JB's - JB's Monorail (People single '75) -- got a perfect copy of this amazing funk single from James Brown's backup band. Very sample-friendly.
Love - Hey Joe (Elektra LP 1966) -- great punked up version, before the Hendrix version...
Status Quo - Pictures of Matchstick Men (Cadet Concept single 1968) -- people always ask me about this great psych single, a perfect example of phasing (a type of delay effect)...
War - Low Rider (comp LP) - 70's rock classic
Animals - It's My Life (MGM single 1965) -- a request from some spring break Michigan guys... good choice...!
