Os
Duques - Pergunta ao Joao 7" EP
(1968)
Here's a Portuguese band with their roots in the early 60's. They played a variety of styles, finally settling in Spain, where they reportedly released four 7" EPs (including this one) and a 7" single between 1965 and 1968. The band included guitarist José Joao "Johnny" Galvao, later of Spain's Los Buenos band.
This EP is probably one of their last and displays a variety of styles. Track 1, Pergunta ao Joao, the only track in Portuguese (the rest are in Spanish with a little bit of English), is a Bossa Nova rip-off, which is pleasant but not particularly memorable. Track 2 is called Ultima Noche but will be familiar to fans of American rock'n'roll as Last Night by the Mar-Keys (Stax). It's a pretty straight cover version, with nice guitar and sax. Track 3 is called Chicas and is bouncy garage-pop in the vein of ? and the Mysterians' lighter efforts and has some funny English lyrics at the end: "Girls.... be very careful with the boys..." The last track, Madrid, is bouncy (and light) British-style pop with a Spanish inflection. (pictures soon!)
